LOCAL HISTORY: BREWERYTOWN “Brewers were attracted to the area ponded by the dam at the Fairmount Water Works for the ice they could harvest from the river. Then, in vaults carved along its banks, brewers would pack wooden hogsheads of lager beer with ice for six to eight months for the beer to 'ripen.' Brewerytown evolved into a neighborhood that accounted for about half the city’s beer production and included some of the largest brewers in the nation, who shipped their beer throughout the world.” Rich Wagner, local historian. Plenty of street parking in the area is a great advantage as there are no restrictions. Public transportation includes busses bypassing the house or just down the block in addition to the historic Girard Avenue Trolley are all available within a two-block perimeter. One could easily walk across the Girard Avenue bridge to reach the zoo in 10 minutes; riding the old-time trolley on Girard Avenue will be a fun way to reach the zoo. The proximity to Fairmount Park makes this an ideal location to explore the city by bus, trolley, foot or by bike (and there is a public access bike rack just two blocks away). In the park, you'll find paths and gardens along the Schuylkill River that lead you to boathouses and the Fairmount Water Works or the nearby historic home at Lemon Hill. Paths in the park also lead you to the Philadelphia Museum of Art; it is a 15-minute walk by foot from the house to the art museum.
